3 Essentials of a Good Leader

The idea of “a leader” comes with so many different connotations, which makes it difficult to get a clear picture of what “good leadership” looks like.

Is it the authoritative person who offers command and clarity? Perhaps it is the caring individual who takes time to check in and provide support.

There are so many different pictures of what it can look like to be a good leader.

That is why when I recruit someone to lead a team of volunteers, I focus my aim to these 3 essentials:

  • Consistency – they have the ability and willingness to create a consistent experience for the people they lead. This includes having a regular pattern to the way they communicate, provide guidance and support as well as their consistent physical (and mental) presence.

  • Communication – they are able to convey information to the people who need it so their team is informed and prepared. This includes ensuring the people they lead understand their role and expectations as well as finding the most effective ways to communicate to their team.

  • Community – they understand the importance of teammates experiencing comradery and connect, and they prioritize finding ways to create those connections. This includes personally engaging with teammates as well as cultivating a team environment where teammates are encouraged to engage with one another.

When a leader offers consistency, communication and community to the people they lead it creates a bond and synergy which enables a team to thrive.
